Interpretation of the Constitution is one of the biggest conflicts within the United States–the highly contentious issue of states’ rights resulted from two different interpretations of what powers should belong to the federal government versus what powers belong to the individual states. No issue has ever caused as much turmoil as the issue of states’ rights–but one side must have more valid arguments. Should the federal government’s power be superior, or should the authority of the individual states be held above all? As Abraham Lincoln said, â€Å"the Constitution does not expressly say.† But through evaluation of the arguments expressed in the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, Lincoln’s Inaugural Address, and Jefferson Davis’ Confederate Constitutional Address, and evaluation of their alignment with the Constitution of the United States of America, we can see that not only are the arguments against States’ rights mor e effective, but they also more accurately interpret both the nature of the Constitution and the original purpose of the Union.
